What is ’boxucation’?

  • boxing

It all starts with our community’s passion for boxing. This is the point of departure for all our work. It’s how we connect with the town.

Through boxing we attract future scholars and present how ‘boxucation’ works. They receive weekly individual training at their gyms and collective training with our professional coaches every two weeks.

During our 10-week camp our coaches also provide training at a beginner level, in order to assess the individual level of future scholars.

Our annual Besesaka Youth Festival is a celebration of what this sport means to our community, and a chance for the next generation of talents to shine through.

  • education

Our educational support is a top priority.

Bukom’s 9% high school completion rate is at the core of many problems faced by local youth and the community as a whole.

At the moment this is done by providing their tuition fee and school materials, weekly extra-curricular academic support and following-up with the local schools.

With our vision of having our own facilities in the heart of the community, we intend to provide full-time academic support for our scholars and at some point even run our own school.

Our long-term goal is that our scholars inspire their peers to stay in and finish high school.

  • leadership development

While we all have a fighter within and our own unique personalities, some of us are born and meant to lead.

We believe growing up in Bukom forges leadership potential, this is why upon awarding our scholarships we identify youth who understand leadership comes with responsibility towards others.

Our life skills workshops are designed to position our scholars in situations where they can develop leadership and communications skills.

We aspire for all our scholars to be role models to their peers by setting an example by striving to become the best version of themselves.

multiple community touchpoints

  • scholars

Our young women and men are the first point of contact for the community to understand ‘boxucation’ and what Besesaka is about.

At their local gyms, at school, in the streets and at home, they follow the Besesaka attitude to life and understand they have a responsibility to inspire others to believe in themselves to awaken the fighter within.

They are our ambassadors, role-models and change-makers.

  • 'boxucation' camp

Our 10-week camp is the vehicle through which we identify potential scholars, as well as meeting their parents and coaches.

We make this opportunity available for 50 boys and girls who will participate in boxing, learning and teamwork activities on a weekly basis, for example LEGO Education workshops, dancing, arts & crafts, life skills.

This is also an opportunity for the community to see ‘boxucation’ in action and the benefits it brings.

  • Besesaka youth festival

Our main event of the year is the annual festival held at Bukom Square, where we celebrate the work we have done throughout the year.

Over 60 fighters participate in a multi-category tournament, which we use as part. of our final assessment to award scholarships.

The community always joins with over 3000 people attending the event to support the participants and the project.
